APL has been a leading force in the evolution of transpacific trade for more than a century and a half. During this period, the company has worked to continuously improve the state of Asian-American relations - and remains committed to this important role today. APL is also connected to Asia through its parent company, the NOL Group of Singapore.
Here are just a few examples of the organizations to which the company's philanthropic resources are being directed in this area:
- CARE, an organization dedicated to improving the health of people in the developing world; our gift is being applied toward CARE's Acute Respiratory Infection Control and Prevention program on the island of Flores, in Indonesia.
- Project HOPE (not affiliated with the H.O.P.E. Institute of Oakland), an organization that promotes public health around the world through medical and health training, health-policy research and humanitarian assistance; our gift is being applied to Project HOPE's work at the Shanghai (China) Children's Medical Center, where last year some 1,341 surgeries were performed and more than 23,000 cases were seen in the emergency room.
In 1960 and 1961, APL was the agent for the first voyage of the S.S. HOPE, a hospital ship that Project HOPE sailed around the world for more than a decade to provide medical care and training in developing countries.
- The Committee of 100, an organization of U.S. citizens of Chinese descent that addresses issues concerning the Chinese-American community and U.S.-China relations.
- The Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, APL's partner in an important philanthropic effort for children in Southeast Asia. APL is a key sponsor of the Helmets for Kids campaign in Vietnam, a country with one of the highest traffic-fatality rates in the world.
Motorcycles play a significant role in personal transportation, and statistics show that only 3% of the country's motorcycle owners wear helmets. The program, organized by the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, aims to make motorcycle helmets both accessible and fashionable for Vietnamese youth.
- The Singapore Children´s Society, a member of The Children's Charities Association, caters to the needs of 40,000 disadvantaged and disabled children through various fundraising activities.
- The National Arts Council, established in 1991, spearheads the development of the arts in Singapore. The Council's mission is to promote the arts, encourage new talent, and raise awareness about artistic endeavors. The NAC provides financial assistance and housing for artists and arts groups, and actively promotes them locally and abroad.
- The Heartware Network of Singapore, a charitable youth organization dedicated to promoting a culture based on an updated version of the "Singapore 5 Cs" (Community, Cohesion, Compassion, Contribution and Commitment).
