Maritime Academy Cadets
Kings Point, New York |
Cognizant of the importance of a healthy global business environment to APL's own success and to achieving worldwide economic prosperity, the company is involved in many, diverse efforts to promote the understanding of international trade.
APL also makes contributions to and/or donates services in the following areas:
Maritime Education
By virtue of the nature of its business, the company is committed to promoting maritime education, and does so by offering support and assistance to a broad range of learning institutions, museums, libraries, and archives.
Among the beneficiaries of APL’s continuing support is the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park Association, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to maritime preservation and education.
The Association supports a wide-ranging program of exhibits, ship preservation, educational programs and publications in order to enhance public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of U.S. national maritime heritage.
The company also supports both the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the California Maritime Academy (part of the California State University system). At the former, the company supports (among other things) an annual award for excellence in information technology. At the latter, APL's contributions help to fund the Academy's Center for Learning and Excellence and the mathematics and engineering outreach program.
The Center offers tutoring and workshops in math and engineering, and the outreach program involves student volunteers from the Academy who work with promising high-school students to help them qualify for admission to the institution.
Donations of Goods and Services
As a global provider of containerized transportation and related services, APL is in a unique position to donate goods and services related to its business. These contributions fall into the following two categories:
- Donations of Containers
APL donates used containers to schools and other community organizations, which use them for storage.
- Donation of Transportation
The company provides virtually free transportation for cargo belonging to qualifying non-profit organizations to destinations served by the company's transportation network.
Supporting Maritime-Related Charitable Efforts
APL recently sponsored Elaine Chua, a young woman from Singapore who is competing in the Global Challenge. Elaine and her fellow crewmen on the 72-foot yacht Serco are sailing in "the world's toughest race" to raise money for Save the Children, a global organization committed to working for lasting, positive change in the lives of children in need. The race began in England in the fall of 2000, and will continue well into 2001 as contestants sail around the world against prevailing winds and currents.
