Temporary Closure of Nhava Sheva Port

11 August 2010

Dear Valued Customer,

On 7 August 2010, “MSC Chitra”, a Panama registered container ship outbound from the Nhava Sheva Port  & “AL KHALIJIA-3”, a ST. Kitts & Nevis registered break bulk cargo ship, inbound to Mumbai Port Trust collided within the Port limits of Mumbai Port Trust. This has resulted in severe damage to “MSC Chitra” which has run aground. The salvage operation is going on and there is oil pollution.

Approx 400 containers from “MSC Chitra” are adrift with some floating in the harbor and some sunk. With some 6 to 7 containers believed to be sunk in the navigational channels, no shipping movements will be permitted until these containers are removed.

Considering the above, all the Vessel movements, in and out of Nhava Sheva Port and Mumbai Port have been cancelled since 7 August 2010 midnight. Vessels in ports are prevented from leaving and no vessels are allowed into the ports.

Understand from government authorities that all available resources and personnel have been activated to try and locate and clear the containers in the channel on priority to resume shipping movements.
