Hongkong Port Congestion
16 Jun 2011
APL and other container shipping lines are working with Hong Kong port officials to alleviate congestion at Hongkong International Terminals. A combination of factors ranging from bad weather to the arrival of additional services at the port is causing vessel berthing delays of up to five days. Congested conditions are affecting all carriers calling in Hong Kong.
Hongkong International Terminals indicates that it is taking the following steps to ease congestion:
- Arranging vessel berthing windows at adjacent terminals;
- Adding truck capacity to transport discharged containers;
- Securing space for additional container storage; and
- Redirecting transshipment barges to another terminal.
It’s estimated that remedial action may take two-to-three weeks to clear up port congestion. In the meantime, we will communicate with customers on the disposition of cargo moving through Hong Kong.
