What do you think of when someone says "Boomerang?" Probably Australia, right? So it's no wonder the Boomerang Box felt right at home during its visit to Fremantle, Australia!
A boomerang is a curved, flat stick that spins back after it is thrown. That's how the Boomerang Box got its name, of course: because no matter how far it travels - across the ocean or around the world - it always returns home. And we get to have the fun of watching it whirl from port to port.
The boomerang was first invented by the Aborigines, the native people of Australia. They created the boomerang we know today that returns to the thrower, and they used it for fun and games. But they also created a boomerang that doesn't return, which they used for work, as a weapon when they hunted for food. Boomerangs were so important to the Aborigines as part of their culture that they often created beautiful artwork with paint or carvings right on their boomerangs. Some of these still exist today, telling the story of life in Australia hundreds of years ago.
Today, boomerangs are mostly used for fun, sort of like Frisbees. But our Boomerang is hard at work. With its bright and beautiful artwork, it spins across continents and oceans telling the story of trade around the world.
