Boomerang Box Jr. spent a busy summer, traveling to Dallas, Texas for the convention of the National Education Association. Thousands of teachers from around the country were thrilled to see the big blue box parked INSIDE the convention center!
Can you find Dallas on a map?
Here are some hints:
- Dallas is located in north central Texas.
- It is located on the Trinity River.
As you can see from your map, Dallas is NOT a seaport! However, it is a transportation hub for north Texas and a major trade and commerce center for the southwestern United States and Mexico.
Dallas was founded by a settler named John Neely Bryan in 1841. He settled on the east bank of the Trinity River near a natural ford, or crossing place. Bryan and future settlers soon found this new city a very convenient place, as two highways built by the Republic of Texas intersected right there.
Dallas first became a major transportation center in the 1870s, when two railroads were built to intersect there: The Houston & Texas Central and the Texas & Pacific. As a rail crossroads, Dallas became almost like a port city. Goods bound for the Northern and Eastern United States passed through Dallas on the railroad, and many people moved there to become part of the excitement and activity of so much trade.
Today, Dallas is still an exciting and active place to be. About 1.2 million people call the Dallas area home. Dallas has become an air crossroads in addition to being a rail crossroads: the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport served 58 million people last year!
After a busy time in Dallas, Boomerang Box Jr. traveled to the West Coast, to its home port in Oakland, California, for a little rest and relaxation. (Well, a cargo container can't really relax, but it does need a little polishing up in between cross-country trips!) Later this fall, Jr. will travel to Denver, Colorado. Stay tuned!
