On October 9, 1998, Greg Nickels hosted a reception for the Boomerang Box student artists. Seventy pieces of original art graced the walls at CAPERS, a West Seattle neighborhood cafe and gourmet shop, during a three week long art show. The actual Boomerang Box was parked outside while the students were feted indoors!
The kids gave a lot of thought to images that make the Pacific Northwest unique and our trade relationship with Asia so valuable, Nickels commented as he viewed the show. Although his favorite sport is baseball and he is a devoted Mariners fan, Nickels stopped to admire the image of the Seattle Sonics home court, the Key Arena, with one of the students.
Nickels, who serves on the Metropolitan King County Council, introduced the Port of Seattle and APL to Sound Schools, a non-profit coalition of public schools in West Seattle. Staff at Sound Schools coordinated production of the art in classrooms last spring. To hold up at sea, each student's artwork was photographed, digitized and printed on vinyl before being applied to the sides of the cargo container. Then Nickels arranged to have each original piece matted for public display.
