Great Toy Challenge

Solve the 2002 Boomerang Box Great Toy Challenge!

First, make sure your students understand the Boomerang Box Great Toy Challenge. Explain that this fall the Boomerang Box will be loaded with donated Toys "R" Us toys. It will then be shipped to a mystery destination, where the toys will be distributed to needy children by international relief organization CARE in one of the many countries around the world where CARE works. Make sure students understand that the mystery destination is a country and that their job in deciphering the clues is to figure out which country it is.

Now have the students read the challenge clues again. You will need a world map and access to an encyclopedia (either book or on-line) to solve the clues.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Great Toy Challenge mystery country has been part of larger empires and other countries over its history. Thus, it is particularly important that your students use up-to-date maps, atlases, and encyclopedias as they work.

Here are some hints for solving the clues:

Clue 1: The 44° North latitude line runs through me. Latitude lines are the lines that run horizontally around the globe. The 0° latitude line is the equator. Then, latitude lines increase toward 90° north of the equator up to the North Pole (the North latitude lines), and at the same time increase south of the equator up to 90° near the South Pole (the South latitude lines). The 44° North latitude line is located about halfway between the equator and the North Pole. By following that latitude line on a map or globe, you could circle the globe and identify every country it touched. If you looked carefully, you would have noticed that Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those countries.
Clue 2: I was once part of the Roman Empire. You needed the library or an encyclopedia to solve this clue. You needed to find out exactly how far the Roman Empire stretched. With that information, you then had to compare the countries that were once part of the Roman Empire with the countries touched by the 44° North latitude line. You probably still had a number of countries on your list after this clue… but hopefully Bosnia and Herzegovina was one of them!
Clue 3: I have many mountains. Back to a map for this clue! Using the list of countries you prepared after Clue 2, you could use a map with topographical information to identify countries that have mountains. An encyclopedia might also have helped you. If you looked up Bosnia and Herzegovina in an encyclopedia, for instance, you would have learned that the 1984 Winter Olympics were held there (or, at least, in the country that was then Yugoslavia but is NOW Bosnia) because of the spectacular Dinaric Alps and great skiing.
Clue 4: Something that happened in my capital city started World War I. This clue again required a library or encyclopedia. Did you figure it out? If you looked it up, you would have found that World War I was started after Francis Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria and heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was killed in the city of Sarajevo in 1914. Sarajevo was at that time under the rule of Austria-Hungary. Today, however, it is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

When you have had a chance to review your students' guesses and you and your students reach a consensus on the mystery destination, students can click in their answer and see immediately if they are right!
