Alexander Maclennan: Trade in South America

Alexander Maclennan When APL ships products to or from anywhere on the east coast of the continent of South America, chances are that Alexander Maclennan is involved. As APL's Sales Manager for the East Coast of South America, Alex works with people in five countries and over a dozen different ports.

Alex grew up in Montevideo, Uruguay. After graduating from Uruguay's ORT University, Alex got a job as a Water Clerk for a shipping agency in his hometown. After two years in that job, Alex moved to a Sales job with a different shipping company. He worked in several different positions with that company in Sales and Logistics, and then moved to Brazil to become their Commercial Director for that country.

The company Alex was working for—Atlas Maritime, Ltd.—is APL's general agent in Brazil. Alex worked closely with APL employees in Brazil, and they were so impressed with his work that they offered him a job… and a big promotion. Now, instead of just directing shipping activities in a single country, Alex is responsible for the east coast of an entire continent!

But what does a Sales Manager in South America do?

Well, Alex mostly makes sure that agents and customers in the region know of APL and the services it provides so that each of APL's offices will continue to be successful. That means that he does everything from helping APL staff use their assets and equipment effectively to representing APL at meetings of the different shipping carriers to helping to support the Customer Service operations in each of these countries.

It's Alex's job to make sure that customers up and down the east coast of South America know what APL does. How would you like to help him? Download the case study and you can… as his new intern!
