John Didion works in Cambria, Wisconsin, but his job touches people all around the world. What does he do?
John is one of the owners of Didion Milling, Inc., a grain processing and merchandising company that John and his brother Dow founded in 1972. Didion Milling mills, processes, and sells corn, soy and grain to customers throughout the United States and in a number of other countries. Didion Milling's facilities include a dry corn mill, a food-grade soy processing facility, a 30,000 square foot warehouse, a laboratory, a packaging facility, and offices.
Getting his products to customers quickly and easily was a top priority for John when he opened the business. Thus, he chose a location with care, in Wisconsin near the farmers who supply his mill but also near convenient transportation for truck and train: Interstate 94 and the Wisconsin Southern Railroad.
A load of John's grain is currently in the Boomerang Box on its way to India to help people recovering from the earthquake there. John is proud of how far his products travel and how many people they serve.
If you were to open a food processing facility in your town, what kind of food would you process? Are there any crops grown near your town? What are they are how are they processed? How do they get from the farms to stores? Where does food grown near your town get traded?
