How would you manage to keep cargo moving around the world through busy times and slow without disappointing your customers?
Well, that's what Leeto Gutierrez does every day! Leeto is the Inbound Sales Manager for APL Philippines. He has worked with APL for almost 17 years, starting in the company's Finance Department, and then working with different customers, including those who needed to ship their goods in 'reefers' or refrigerated cargo containers.
As Inbound Sales Manager, Leeto has to make sure that the staff in APL's offices in the Philippines - in Batangas, Bugo, Cagayan de Oro, Cavite, Cebu, Davao, Manila, Mariveles, and Subic - are all working efficiently at moving goods in and out of the country. (Can you find these cities on a map?)
He has to make sure that the right number and type of cargo containers come in to Philippines ports carrying cargo so that they can be filled and sent back out again. He has to make sure that his colleagues have the right equipment on hand to handle any type of cargo that APL customers need shipped to the Philippines. And he has to work with customers on the rate - or price - they will be charged to ship something from one place to another.
That's pretty complicated, right? But Leeto's job can get even more complicated than that! During busy times, when all the ships coming and going from the Philippines are already full, Leeto might have to turn away cargo. But he has to do that without hurting his relationship with his customers, because he knows he'll want to work with them again.
It's Leeto's job to see that everything moves smoothly from one place to the next. He can't overload ships with cargo. But at the same time, he doesn't want ships to travel without enough cargo. He always wants to have just enough cargo that needs to be moved at just the right time! You might describe Leeto as something of a juggler because he has to manage so many details all at once. But in his job, what he's juggling are huge cargo containers and enormous cargo ships. There's no room for mistakes… so Leeto pays careful attention to his customers' needs and to the shipping traffic in and out of the Philippines.
How do you think you'd do at a job like this?
