Walter Seidl |
Every wifes dream hiring someone to manage their husband!! Not quite, in maritime terms, husbanding refers to the act of taking care of all of the ships needs while in port. Walter Seidl is a husbanding manager for American Ship Management (ASM), the company which manages APLs container ships. Walter takes care of the three APL U.S. flag ships which arrive the U.S. West Coast each week, one into Los Angeles and two into Seattle.
What are a ships husbanding needs?
Husbanding needs include fueling the ship, providing equipment or materials like navigation charts, arranging crew member trips to the doctor, providing fresh water, working with tugs, pilots, paying necessary fees, making arrangements with contractors to do work on the ship and providing food provisions for the crew!
How did you get to your current position of Husbanding Manager?
After I graduated from the NY Maritime Academy, with the dwindling U.S. flag fleet, I took a shore side job as a Stowage Coordinator where I coordinated the stowage of container ships. After a few years, I moved to APL where I managed feeder vessel contracts. Feeder vessels fill a similar role to small planes. When you fly from San Francisco, California to Rochester, New York, you dont get to take a wide body 747 direct to a little place like Rochester, you fly a big jet to Chicago and a puddle jumper to Rochester. The same is true in the shipping business, big vessels run to places like Singapore, then feeder vessels are used to get to places like Bangladesh or Cochin. All feeders vessels are leased. It was fun to manage these contracts because it was a little like trading commodities, oil, sugar or gold. It's all based on supply and demand so prices fluctuate. I had to study the market and make the best choices for the company.
When the company, American Ship Management (ASM) was formed to manage APLs U.S. flag vessels, I saw an opportunity to re-establish ties with U.S. managed container vessels. I've been a Husbanding Manager for ASM just since November.
Why do you think trade is important to your community and to the international community?
I think, we, as a nation, have become consumers instead of producers. We have to trade to survive. Were not self sufficient. We have to look at what we need and what we can offer others. Many people work in the trade industry, from the producer to the truck driver delivering the product. Think of how many people are involved in getting a pair of Nikes to the local Foot Locker!
What exactly is your role in the process of international trade?
ASM is the company that provides the assets (ships) to bring the goods from point A to point B. Our goal is to provide and keep ocean assets running, safe and in good condition, and to deliver containers of goods on time!
What are your goals in this position/plans for 1998?
ASM wants to provide the best possible service for APL and our customers in keeping the massive ships running flawlessly.
What do you like most/least about your job?
I like meeting people from all over the world and looking at ways to make the process of serving ships easier and more efficient. I dont like the phone calls at 0300 but this goes with the job!
Do you have any advise for school children K-12?
If you like to meet interesting people and learn more about countries far away, the transportation industry might be for you! Learn as much as you can about other countries, cultures and the way we live in America. It would also be very helpful if you can learn another language. Good luck!
