Life as APL’s Maintenance and Repair Manager

Edith Chan
Edith Chan works for APL’s sister company, American Consolidation Services (ACS). She works with companies who have consolidated cargo needs.

What is your position?

I am American Consolidation Service’s (ACS) Sales Manager for Hong Kong and South China. I report to the General Sales Manager of North Asia.

How long have you been in your position?

I have been in this position for almost one year (started May 1, 1997)

What’s your background — how did you get here?

I am holding a Bachelor Degree of Business Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. I started in the shipping industries in 1987. In December 1987, I joined APL as the Pricing Analyst of the Asia Area Headquarters. I spent almost 5 years in APL with my last assignment as the Market Planning Manager. I moved to Vancouver, Canada in 1992 and was working in the Shipping companies — Evergreen and OOCL there. In 1997, I decided to return to Hong Kong and I rejoined the APL group working for ACS.

Which other countries do you work with? How do you work with them? Who do you work with?

I work closely with ACS offices in the States, as well as in Asia. I need to exchange information on our current business and potential sales opportunities with our offices in the States. When dealing with daily operations issues for our existing customers, I need to communicate, via long distance call or email, with other Asia offices.

In what ways are you working with international trade day to day?

As Hong Kong and China are the major sourcing (manufacturing) areas for our customers, I need to understand the Government regulations and trade practices for export from Hong Kong and China. These issues including the export Customs requirements in China; the proper document for exporting of quota items from Hong Kong and China; different charges paying by different parties due to different international buying terms. Customers would need to know the details of these kinds of issues.

What do you see as your biggest successes to date?

Although all our customers are importers, they have different needs and expectations from ACS. Usually, customers will travel to Hong Kong to understand more from the sourcing areas. I believe it is very important that I can answer their questions in different aspects of the operations. This will give them the confidence that ACS will handle their cargo in a professional way.

Describe a typical day.

When I come to the office, I view all the incoming emails from other ACS offices, or from the customer direct. I will need to meet with our existing customers on a regular basis to give them an update on any new developments of ACS. If there is any issue going on with them, I would need to coordinate with other departments to get it solved. These issues are mostly related to the daily operations or regarding the information system. When there is potential customer coming up, I need to arrange meeting to discuss our services with them. If customer is interested to see our warehouse facility, I will arrange the tour for them.

What do you like most/least about your job?

I like the chance to meet with different people from different industries. The thing that I like the least is doing the warehouse tour, especially during the summer time in Hong Kong.

Any advice to kids K-12?

Try to expose yourself to things happening outside of your own country. In today’s world, there are so many economic activities among different countries. It would be great to know a second language as it will definitely help you to success in doing international business.
