APL Boomerang Box Teacher Update Spring 2003
Boomerang Box Takes a Breather
2003 has already been quite a momentous year. But the many historic events of the year to dateincluding the continuing global recession, the war with Iraq, and the SARS epidemic in Asiahave made conditions difficult for many businesses that trade or travel around the world. Shipping company APL, whose parent company, NOL, is based in Singapore, is no exception to this trend. And so, to conserve funds until the global economy improves, the Boomerang Box Project will be taking a break. The Web site will not be updated, nor will new curriculum chronicling container journeys around the world be prepared.
Project Archives Make a "Virtual" Journey Easy
But even while the Boomerang Box team awaits better economic times to recommence our work, we want to encourage you to take a 'virtual' journey with your students using the six years of archived materials on the Web site.
Using the logos at the top of this page, you can access:
- Trade Topics, which are organized by subject area and include a wealth of information on subjects related to geography, map-reading, navigation, history and culture, and trade.
- People Profiles, which introduce people from around the world who are involved in transportation or trade.
- And even our Journey Log, which provides a chronicle of the many different ports the Boomerang Box has visited since 1997. Pick a port. Have your students find it on a map and chart its latitude and longitude. Then have them learn about it, its country, its people, and its history. Is your hometown profiled on the Web site? Take a 'virtual' journey and find out!
And don't forget… boomerangs always return!
On behalf of the Boomerang Box team (a small group of part-timers who have kept the Box moving since 1997 and have prepared all the material you see on this site) we wish you the best as you and your students explore the wonderful world of geography. Boomerangs always return when they're thrown, and we hope that the Boomerang Box will as well, once the global economy improves. We'll look forward to talking with you then!
