New EMX Service Offers Alternative Route to  North Europe, U.S. Midwest

Dec 13, 2004

All across the world children are wondering if they're on Santa's "good" or "naughty" list, but shippers in Europe and the U.S. have a much bigger concern: they're hoping to avoid the holiday congestion and get their cargo to destination on time.

Help is on hand with APL's recently-launched transatlantic service, the Europe-Montreal Express (EMX) , which offers an alternative route for cargo going from the U.S. Midwest to North Europe, and from North Europe to the U.S. Midwest.

Previously, shippers relied on the U.S. East Coast ports to get their cargo to these destinations but the EMX saves customers valuable time with improved transits.

With the EMX, transit times from Midwest origins like Chicago and Detroit to North Europe are cut down by two to three days. This is also true for transits from North Europe to Midwest.

All this is good news for shippers on both sides of the Atlantic, as trade between the European Union and U.S./Canada is flourishing.

The EU and the U.S. are each other's main trading partners, accounting for around one-fifth of each other's bilateral trade, or about €1 billion a day.

The EU is also Canada's second-largest trading partner, accounting for some 10 per cent of total Canadian imports and 6 per cent of total Canadian exports. Main EU exports to Canada include machinery, transport equipment and chemical products.

The EMX, APL's sixth transatlantic string, also provides customers with extensive connections from a host of European destinations, completing its well-established APX, ATN and ATS services from North Europe and the MGS and MAT links to the Mediterranean.
