Challenge
One of the world’s leading sportswear companies has manufacturing operations across multiple markets but it did not make economic sense to ship the small volume of goods from some of these countries directly to destination. Added to that, the sheer complexity of their manufacturing operations and retail network meant that their transportation and logistics needs were highly complex. Recognizing that their supply chain inefficiency was affecting their profitability, they looked for a partner who could ensure optimal supply chain efficiency and thereby improve profitability.
Solution
In stepped APL – the solution was to implement a program involving a team of expert personnel, and dedicated facilities and space to streamline the flow of products. APL analysts and business development specialists worked on-site at the customer’s office supported by implementation and operations teams in other parts of the world to fast-track the set-up of new hubs. This enabled products originating in low-volume countries to be sent to logistics facilities in these key hubs and consolidated before being transported to their final destinations, enhancing efficiencies in their supply chain. Within 5 months, APL had the program up and running throughout the customer’s key manufacturing operations well ahead of the expected 24 months.
Result
The APL approach resulted in an unprecedented, multi-phase, global supply chain partnership that optimized resources and information. Inventory flow to the 140 countries the customer retails in, improved drastically. Merchandise now reaches retail outlets faster, enabling the customer to set trends and maximize profitability. And consumers are able to get the latest products to enhance their sporting performance. Each phase is a continuous improvement process that takes the partnership of APL and the customer to a new level.
Now, that’s APL moving business forward.
