Marble Blocks Stowage Guidelines

Granite/Stone/Marble

Blocks of granite, stone or marble can weigh up to 25tons each and exerts considerable concentrated load onto a small container floor space. In addition, when customer moves them in and out of container, they usually do so by pushing and dragging it on the container floor, resulting in broken floorboard and bowed cross-members due to concentrated load exceeding the specification of the container. We should encourage shipper to carry such cargo using open-top or flatrack unless they are willing to take the risk and bear the damage cost to APL boxes.

Note: Railway companies have specific limits on granite/stone/marble weight and stowage. Please check with destination offices if the cargo will be moving on railway.

Granite/stone/marble Loading guide

Below is a general guideline to stow and secure large granite/marble blocks inside a container. It is shipper’s responsibility to adopt the correct stowage and securing systems required for their specific cargo sizes, as well as engage a competent marine surveyor to design the stowage and securing system for complicated cargo sizes when necessary
