History - A Global Presence

The Korea

Just as early expansion set the tone for historic firsts over the course of the company’s 150-year history, APL’s current approach to new markets brings businesses closer to one another.

Robert Dollar’s legacy of investing in each country served by APL continues with new additions to an expansive transportation network. A decade and a half ago, APL was one of the first transportation providers to see the strategic importance of a strong presence in the Middle East. Today, the company is a household name in many countries in the region.

Expansion into other key markets has continued. APL’s entry into the growing Latin America trade has provided manufacturers and retailers with the kind of highly dependable service they need in order to control the economics of their businesses. Most recently, the company’s new trans-Atlantic service closed the final East-West gap in its global network.

And two recent events have played a key role in extending the company’s reach: APL’s 1997 merger with Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) and its 1998 entry into the New World Alliance.

The APL-NOL merger has created one of the world’s largest and best-integrated companies involved in global transportation and related services. And by collaborating with alliance partners to coordinate vessel schedules, share vessel space, and provide access to each other’s terminals and equipment, APL is poised to offer even more comprehensive coverage of the world’s markets to its customers.

So, from the arrival of the California in San Francisco to strategic mergers and alliances, the theme of exploration has been a constant in APL’s 150 years of history — and it will continue to play an important role in the company’s vision for the future.
