2000 - Due to the threat of the Asian Longhorned Beetle (Anaplophora glabripennis),
Brazil has issued new regulations for imported solid wood packing material (SWPM).
The requirements impact shipments from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, North
Korea, and South Korea.
The regulations require wood packaging materials originating in (or in transit
from) the countries listed above to be incinerated in the originating country.
Shipments must carry a phytosanitary certificate from the Phytosanitation Protection
Office in the originating country. The certificate should vouch for the proper
heat treatment, fumigation or other preservation method, exposure time, and fumigation
temperature. Fumigation or heat treatment must have been performed no sooner than
15 days prior to the shipment leaving the country of origin.
If it is not possible to incinerate wood packaging materials in the originating country, then the materials are to be transported inside their original containers or inside closed trucks. The importing agent is then held responsible for incineration costs at destination.
