APL, APL Logistics Honored For Tech Innovation

Both listed in prestigious rankings of top IT users

Singapore, Oakland CA, 20 September 2006 – Global transportation and supply chain leaders APL and APL Logistics have been honored among the most innovative users of information technology by a pair of respected industry journals.

APL was ranked first among all ocean container shipping lines in the 18th annual InformationWeek 500 listing of top business technology innovators. Sister company APL Logistics was the only 3PL to be named to the 19th annual CIO 100 Awards, which recognized organizations for their ability to leverage IT effectively to maximize business value.

The rankings - based on rigorous application and screening processes - are the latest in a series of technology-related honors for APL and APL Logistics. The two companies comprise the core businesses of Singapore-based NOL Group, one of the world’s top transportation and logistics providers.

Wu Choy Peng, CIO of NOL Group said: “We are delighted to get this kind of recognition for the vital role IT plays in our business. We have diverse customer needs spread across multiple industries throughout the world but all have a common need - that their products reach global destinations quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. IT is the unseen facilitator that fulfills this goal.”

APL Logistics’ entry focused on its success in harnessing the potential of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

It showcased the NOL-Sun Advanced Technology Centre, which was opened in collaboration with Sun Microsystems in Singapore last year. The Centre offers a full spectrum of RFID tagging, training and testing services in a real supply chain environment.

APL’s entry highlighted the use of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and active RFID at its marine terminals. Among other benefits, the application of technology has reduced trucker wait times at terminal gates by 40 percent and enabled APL to reduce the time it takes to locate cargo in a crowded container yard from hours to just seconds.

Ms Wu said: “Our guiding principles are to leverage IT to help run, grow and transform our business. Going forward, our focus will be on rolling out the next phase of our RFID program, as well as continuing to develop IT platforms that helps us to align our logistics and container transportation businesses.”

This is the seventh consecutive year that APL has been named to InformationWeek’s top 500. For the past six years it has placed among the top 100. APL, was recently named the Ethos Management Consulting top carrier in its Ocean Carriers' E-Commerce Stat us Report 2006/7, which is a comprehensive study that scores and compares e-commerce tools provided by carriers, from shippers' perspective.

NOL was recently named a Smart50 company by ZDNet Asia. The Smart50 awards are given to companies who have excelled in using IT for strategic business benefits.
