Singapore; 22 July 2002 – NOL, together with a prominent Dutch university, today launched a unique Masters degree designed specifically for the management trainees of this global transportation and logistics company.
The Master of Science degree in Economics and Logistics (MSc MEL) is offered in conjunction with Erasmus University (Rotterdam). It marries together the experience of the day-to-day working lives of its Management Trainees globally with an additional theoretical framework and prepares them for management roles in their career with this global Singapore-based company.
“We are committed to investing in the skills of our employees, in good times and not so good times,” said NOL Group President and CEO, Flemming Jacobs.
“In fact, today it is as important as ever to ensure we are continuously meeting the needs of customers and remaining ahead of our competition, with the right people, with the right skills to achieve the highest levels of efficiency and make the most of every opportunity as the recovery happens and world trade picks up again,” he said.
The two-year Masters programme is being offered as an extension to the NOL Group’s global Management Trainee Programme, a three-year training course that fast tracks top young graduates to a management career with the company.
The Masters course modules were selected and combined by NOL to specifically meet the company’s needs. Modules include shipping economics and policy, logistics and supply-chain management, international economics and information management.
“Our customers will benefit as the knowledge and skills extend through the company, and the industry as a whole will benefit from raising the benchmark in the level of knowledge available within the industry’s ranks,” said Mr Jacobs.
“The partnership of NOL and Erasmus is a partnership between a top global corporation and a top international business school to benefit the global team of talents joining the NOL Group’s Management Trainee Programme every year,” he Jacobs said.
“The opportunity to study for a Masters degree while continuing to work with NOL provides theoretical and practical training in areas that will benefit both employees and the company,” said the NOL Group’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Ms Anne Benbow.
“The success of MEL at Erasmus amidst a period of decline in maritime skills is to be found in our conviction for a need to train global MEL executives of the future through advanced research based executive programmes,” said the Academic Director of the NOL Masters programme from Erasmus University, Professor Dr. Hercules E. Haralambides.
Ms Benbow said the Masters course was the latest in a number of learning opportunities available at NOL - part of the company’s commitment to lifelong learning.
Other initiatives include NOL’s Global Campus - another first for the industry. Established in 2000, Global Campus uses both face-to-face and web-based learning tools which allow employees access to learning anytime, from anywhere in the world. It was recently cited as a key factor in NOL’s liner subsidiary APL being awarded Carrier of The Year by prestigious European magazine International Freighting Weekly (IFW)
Along with support for employees on various training courses, educational initiatives include opportunities for post-graduate studies at globally recognised universities, including MIT, Harvard and Stanford in the United States, the UK’s Cranfield University, and sponsorship of the Nanyang Fellowship MBA course in Singapore.
