New heads for Greater China, Asia/Middle East, Trans-Pacific Trade

Singapore, Oakland, CA, London, 13 June, 2003 – Global container carrier APL today announced the appointment of Koay Peng Yen to head its Greater China region, Brian Lutt to head its Asia/Middle East region, and Robert Sappio to lead the Trans-Pacific trade.      Executive Images Below

Mr Koay was formerly senior vice president (SVP), Trans-Pacific trade, based in Oakland, California. He began his career with APL’s parent company Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) in 1988 and has progressed quickly through the ranks, holding various senior management positions, including Vice President of APL’s Intra-Asia, Middle East and Australia trade and, earlier, NOL's Vice President of Corporate Planning.

CEO of APL, Ron Widdows said, “The Trans-Pacific is crucial to the company’s overall performance and Peng Yen did an outstanding job repositioning the trade for profitability this year in his role as SVP. Peng Yen’s experience managing the Trans-Pacific and Intra-Asia trades, both of which are heavily engaged in the business in China, will be valuable in his new role as President of the Greater China region,” Mr Widdows said.

New President of Asia/Middle East, Mr Lutt has been with APL for more than 20 years. Before establishing APL’s Greater China region, he was SVP for the Asia-Europe trade. He has managed a number of markets including Bangladesh, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. He has also held sales and general management responsibilities in the United States with APL. In his new role, he is based at APL’s corporate headquarters in Singapore.

“Under Brian Lutt’s leadership, APL’s Greater China region surpassed all targets,” Mr Widdows said. “He took on the huge task of also overseeing the extensive APL Asia/Middle East region on an interim basis following management changes earlier this year. As President of our Asia/Middle East region, he now focuses his considerable ability on this challenging and diverse market.”

Mr Widdows said veteran APL executive Robert Sappio, currently SVP, sales and marketing, North America, now heads the important Trans-Pacific trade.

Mr Sappio began his career with APL in 1982, and has worked for the company in various senior management positions throughout the United States and Asia, including SVP Global Sales and Marketing based in Singapore, VP and Managing Director Central Asia based in Hong Kong, VP and Managing Director Eastern Region based in New Jersey.

Mr Widdows said, “Prior to taking over the Trans-Pacific market, Mr Sappio drove the successful restructuring of the APL sales organization in North America, with the changes there already yielding improved results.”

Commenting on the appointments, Mr Widdows, said, “Above all, this shows the depth of talent APL has throughout its global operations.

“Peng Yen is one of the new generation of managers and his dynamic and energetic approach is well suited to the vibrant China market.

“Brian has done an outstanding job of managing two large regions over recent months. Now he can focus all his energies on overseeing the development of the increasingly important Asia/Middle East area on a permanent basis. His intimate knowledge of many of the markets in the region makes him uniquely qualified for the role, and will be a considerable asset as he expands APL’s reach throughout this vast region, which stretches from Korea and far eastern Russia west to Egypt.

“And Bob’s former role as head of the North American sales force, where most of the customer control of the Trans-Pacific trade is located, means he had already been working hand-in-glove with Peng Yen and our Trans-Pacific team throughout this year’s contract negotiations, so he is well grounded in the customer-specific commitments we have undertaken and has strong customer relationships,” Mr Widdows concluded.

All the appointees will report directly to Mr Widdows.
