APL Boosts Mexico-Asia Service to Meet Growing Customer Needs

Singapore, Oakland CA, London, March 11, 2003 – Global container carrier APL has expanded its Mexico Asia Express (MAX) service, adding calls at the booming Chinese ports of Shanghai and Chiwan, and larger, faster ships to meet the growing demands of customers.

“Customers in the Chiwan and Shanghai areas are part of the reason this is one of the most dynamic exporting regions in the world. They need fast connections to their markets in the Americas and we are pleased to be able to respond,” said Manny Fernandez, head of APL’s Latin America region.

“The enhanced service also provides greater connectivity for exporters of Central American and Mexican products to the Asian markets and in particular China,” Mr Fernandez added.

From March 13, the service will deploy six nominal 4,050 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) ships – four from service partner, TMM Lines, and two from APL. They have an operating speed of 24.5 knots and reefer (refrigerated container) capacity of 400 TEU, which will provide Central American and Mexican exporters much-needed space for perishable cargo.

The fixed-day weekly service offers highly competitive transit times; Shanghai to Manzanillo (Mexico), for example, will take just 17 days. It already offers rapid transit times from Taiwan, Korea and Japan to Ensenada, which is the gateway to the maquiladora manufacturing region.

The new port rotation is: Chiwan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Pusan, Yokohama (Eastbound), Los Angeles, Ensenada, Manzanillo, Yokohama (Westbound), Kobe, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Chiwan.
