APL Moves to Own Organisation in Russia
London, 24 Mar 2004 - Global container transport provider APL is increasing its direct presence in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) through the formation of APL CIS, a wholly-owned Russian entity that will handle all the carrier's interests in the region from 1st April 2004.
Until now, APL has worked with local agency company MCT Shipping Service, although the line has maintained its own Moscow presence since early 2002 when it opened a representative office in the Russian capital.
Dave Appleton, APL's president for Europe, paid tribute to the work of MCT. "They helped us establish a presence in the Russian market to meet customers' growing needs there and we are pleased and grateful for their work. They are supportive of our decision to establish our own organisation and we look forward to maintaining good relations with MCT as we move on in the future."
APL CIS has opened two offices in Russia initially - the head office in St Petersburg and a branch office in Moscow. Jan Mortensen will head up the company, reporting to Poul Kristensen, regional managing director for Russia, CIS and the Baltic States.
"We believe the most effective way to service our customers is through our own team," said Mr Mortensen. "We want to further increase our growing volumes and deliver the efficiency benefits we can achieve from having full management control."
APL provides a wide choice of service options for the whole of Russia and the CIS via a range of entry points. In Europe, cargo moves through Baltic and Black Sea ports, connected to APL's line-haul hubs in North Europe and the Mediterranean. In Asia, feeders between Vostochny and Busan link with APL's transpacific and intra-Asia services. From Vostochny APL's inland distribution network covers the Russian Far East. APL also offers services on the Trans Siberian Railway for transit cargoes and destinations in the Western part of Russia.
