Barcelona, Spain, 2 June 2003 – Global transportation company APL has established
a wholly-owned operation in Spain, reflecting growing customer demands in this
market and the growth potential of the wider Mediterranean.
The APL Spain office in Barcelona, opening on July 1 under the leadership of Country
Manager, Simon Trobe, also covers Portugal, and complements a network of APL and
agency offices in Italy and France – building on the company’s 20-year presence
in the region.
APL has entered into a strategic alliance with one of Spain’s largest shipping
groups, Maritima del Mediterraneo, S.A. (Marmedsa), which, in conjunction with
APL Spain, will provide APL’s local customers with a full range of intermodal,
documentation and customer services, supported by access to APL’s global trade
network.
“Establishing our own organisation and office in Spain is a clear demonstration
of our commitment to the growing Mediterranean markets and will ensure we can
continue to enhance services and work closely with local customers,” Mr Trobe
said.
“We have chosen to open our first office in Barcelona in view of Spain’s import
and export potential, and also because Barcelona provides an excellent, efficient
gateway to many locations in Spain.
“APL will continue to work with its existing agency partners in Portugal,” Mr
Trobe added.
Peter Jongepier, APL Europe’s London-based Vice President Sales and Marketing
said, “We are firm believers that the Mediterranean will continue to grow in importance
as trading partners both for Asia and the United States. The creation of APL Spain
is evidence of our intent to grow our business in the Mediterranean region and
enhance the service we provide to our customers.”
