11 Dec 2003 – APL containership captain, Nick Sinkevich (pictured on right), gets an overview of the weather module installation process from International SeaKeepers Society field engineer, Mike Turner, onboard the President Polk while the containership was berthed in Seattle recently.

The module, which consists of three major components, was later installed on the forward masthead of the ship to send weather condition updates via satellite to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) every three hours or every hour in storm conditions. The information will further help scientists predict the weather and monitor global climate change.

SeaKeepers President Tom Houston said, “We are grateful that APL has agreed to participate in this pilot project for container vessels. We believe that the success of this project will eventually lead to greater economic benefits and synergies for all sea users.” APL containerships are the first in the shipping industry to participate in the pilot project.

“APL is pleased to support this essential project,” commented Captain Tey Yoh Huat, APL’s Vice President, Marine Operations. “The information gathered will also be valuable to the ships and to customers with time sensitive shipments in forecasting weather patterns and scheduling our routes.”

Other APL containerships participating in the program that will receive weather modules in the future include the President Kennedy and the APL Japan.
