APL Adds Montreal to Transatlantic Services
Direct Access to Canada: Faster Access to US Midwest

Singapore, Oakland CA, London, 17 Sep 2004 – APL, a leading global container transportation provider, has announced a new transatlantic service from the end of October between North Europe and Montreal. The Europe-Montreal Express (EMX) will serve Canadian importers and exporters and also creates an efficient alternative route to the American Midwest by offering competitive transit times from Europe to the Port of Montreal.

To provide its customers with this additional transatlantic service option without expanding capacity on the route, APL will purchase slots on reliable existing sailings, offering weekly service on three ships, each with 3000 nominal TEU capacity, on the following rotation:

Le Havre – Rotterdam – Bremerhaven – Montreal – Le Havre

“This new service adds to existing coverage we provide customers using our own tonnage in the North Atlantic trade,” said Ken O’Brien, Atlantic Trade Director. “The expanded coverage is in direct response to customers’ needs for direct access to Canada and through Montreal to the American Midwest.”

“APL currently serves transatlantic customers in Canada and the Midwest via New York,” said Brian Holden, Managing Director of APL Canada. “By offering Montreal as an additional entry point, we help customers save valuable time getting goods to market.

“This added link to Canada also complements APL’s extensive existing Pacific links through the port of Vancouver,” Mr Holden said.

The first eastbound sailing on APL’s EMX service is due to commence loading in Montreal on October 30th. Transit time from Montreal to Le Havre is just eight days, while transit times from Europe to Montreal are amongst the fastest in the industry.

EMX will be APL’s sixth transatlantic string, complementing its well established APX (Atlantic Pacific Express), ATN (Atlantic North) and ATS (Atlantic South) services from North Europe and the MGS (Mediterranean Gulf Service) and MAT (Mediterranean Atlantic) links to the Mediterranean.
