London, June
14, 2002 – APL, the global container transportation company, has been voted
Shipping Line of the Year by the judges at the prestigious International Freighting
Weekly (IFW) Freighting Industry Awards 2002.
At the gala awards dinner in London on Monday on June 10, 2002, APL Managing Director
for the United Kingdom, Peter Hall received the coveted trophy from Paul Neagle,
Chief Executive of the TT Club, sponsors of the 2002 Shipping Line of the Year.
In their citation, the panel of independent judges, which included senior industry
figures and leading press commentators, said “APL provided clear evidence of improved
and expanded services to shippers, with new route launches and new offices, as
well as additional IT products.
The line’s investment in staff, in particular its Global Campus scheme, which
offers training using the company’s intranet, e-learning, chat rooms and instructor-led
courses was singled out for praise.”
APL’s intermodal developments in Europe were also considered impressive.
Accepting the award on behalf of APL, Peter Hall, said, “We are proud to receive
the IFW Award, which is one of the premier industry honours in Europe. It is a
recognition not just of the progress made by the UK and European teams over the
last twelve months, but also of the achievements of the whole organisation during
what has been a difficult year for the liner industry.”
The awards presentation was held in front of 650 guests at the City of London
Headquarters of the Honourable Artillery Company, Britain’s oldest military regiment
formed by Royal Charter given by King Henry VIII in 1537. The ceremony was hosted
by BBC broadcasting personality, John Humphrys.
