In a move that underscores the growing potential of the Baltic region,
APL has established a directly owned company and opened its first area office
in Riga, Latvia. APL Latvia SIA opened for business on 17 January 2002 under the
leadership of General Manager Ms. Dzintra Vilane.
Ms. Vilane, who reports to APL’s Managing Director Russia and Baltic States, Poul
Kristensen, heads a team of six who will provide APL’s local customers with a
full range of customer services and access to APL’s global trade network.
“Establishing our own organisation and office in Latvia is a clear demonstration
of our commitment to the growing Baltic markets,” commented Mr. Kristensen. “We
have chosen to open our first office in Riga in view of Latvia’s import and export
potential, and also because Riga provides an excellent, efficient gateway for
many locations in the Commonwealth of Independent States.”
APL will continue to work with its existing agency partners in Estonia and Lithuania,
Mr. Kristensen added.
David Appleton, APL Europe’s London-based Vice President Sales and Marketing,
stated: “We are firm believers that the Baltic States, as well as Russia and its
other neighbouring countries, will continue to grow in importance as trading partners
both for the rest of Europe and globally. The creation of APL Latvia is evidence
of our intent to grow our business in the region and enhance the service we provide
to our customers.”
APL provides customers around the world with container transportation services
through a network combining high-quality intermodal operations with state-of-the-art
information technology. APL is the container transportation arm of Neptune Orient
Lines Limited, a global transportation and logistics company engaged in shipping
and related businesses.
