Safeguarding Chemicals and Biological Products
Many non-food products are also shipped in refrigerated containers. These include medical supplies, photographic materials, cosmetics, chemicals, resins and electronic components.
Typically, these cargoes are even more fragile than other perishables and must be treated with the highest level of care.
Temperature management
Many of these products are extremely sensitive to changes in temperatures. Indeed, with some chemical cargoes, chemical reaction can occur if temperatures are not kept within a prescribed range. Thus, it is critical to understand thoroughly a product's temperature requirements and carefully monitor all procedures that affect temperature management - from pre-cooling to packaging to stowage.
Pre-shipment handling
Some of these products are hazardous, and most are highly susceptible to damage. Always take appropriate safety precautions and institute proper handling procedures.
Sanitation
Careless sanitary practices are harmful and could be dangerous with these products. Medical products risk bacterial contamination from exposure to dirt and animal products. While other products can undergo chemical reactions if they are exposed to incompatible substances.
Pre-cooling
The product should always be pre-cooled to the recommended carrying or storage temperature before shipping.
Packaging and stowage
Packaging must be sturdy enough to protect the product and be suited to the product's characteristics. The product may need to be protected from moisture, or it may be in liquid form and require special packaging. Packaging must be vented to allow airflow for temperature management. Stowage is more critical than usual because of the fragile nature of these products.
Product compatibility
Not all chemical products can be shipped together in a common container. Always follow manufacturer's instructions and contact APL when a question arises. Our dedicated and highly trained personnel will do the necessary research and respond to you promptly. |
