APL Bags ‘Excellence in Environmental Management Award’ at Lloyd’s List Americas Awards 2019
APL, part of the CMA CGM Group, has won the ‘Excellence in Environmental Management Award’ at the Lloyd’s List Americas Awards 2019 held on 25 September in Houston, Texas, USA. The accolade is a recognition of APL’s environmental stewardship in reducing marine environment pollution.
APL Chief Executive Officer, Stephane Courquin said, “APL and the CMA CGM Group care for our environment and support causes in marine pollution reduction for ocean biodiversity protection. As an example of this commitment, Mr Rodolphe Saadé, CMA CGM Group Chairman and CEO has decided that we will conserve the marine ecosystem instead of traversing the Northern Sea Route. None of the Group’s over 500 vessels will be sailing on that sea lane with this bold call he made. We are truly proud to be wearing this badge of distinction and will persevere in our pursuits for excellence in sustainable shipping.”
Responsible environmental management is a cornerstone of APL’s operations. The ocean carrier protects the marine environment from the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms in ballast water carried by its ships. Its vessel fleet also deploys the intermediate solution of mid-ocean ballast water exchange to remove, render harmless, or avoid the uptake or discharge of aquatic organisms and pathogens within ballast water and sediments.
Earlier this year, APL became a partner of The Ocean Cleanup on a course to rid the oceans of plastics. Though the collaboration, APL transports containers of components and equipment for the non-government engineering environmental organisation to extract plastic pollution from the oceans.
Globally, APL employees also volunteered in coastal and waterway clean-up for litter-free seas and rivers; as well as raising funds for marine charities.
Beyond marine conservation, APL has made continual progress in reducing carbon emissions. In 2018, APL recorded a 47.4% reduction in carbon emissions per transported container per kilometer, compared to its base level in 2009. Navigating ahead, APL is resolved on reducing carbon emissions by 30% between 2015 and 2025, a target set by CMA CGM Group.
Keeping sulphur oxide emissions low, APL uses low-sulphur fuel on its vessels and practices cold-ironing. Ramping up for the IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap regulation that will kick-in from 1st January 2020, APL and its parent group will be using low sulphur fuel, scrubbers and liquefied natural gas for new vessels in the future.
